Attitudes
This week I would like to share with you
part of an article from the most recent Gospel Advocate. In his article
“Contrasting Mindsets” Phil Sanders notes several differences between
the postmodern worldview and the Christian worldview in the area of
religion.
Postmodernist reject the
Christian claim that Jesus is the only Lord and Savior. They
also refuse to hold the Bible as the only authoritative religious
book. The true Christian, by contrast, “seeks to please God” and
expresses this in his devotion to God’s will as given to us in His Word.
Brother Sanders provides
valuable insight into the two mindsets saying:
- The postmodernist says, “I’m looking for a
truth that works for me.” But the Christian says, “I’m looking for
the truth that sets me free, found in the words of Jesus” (John
8:31-32).
- The postmodernist says, “I can only try to see
life from my own perspective; reality is too complex to understand
it all.” But the Christian says, “I can read the Scriptures and
understand God’s will for my life” (2 Tim. 3:16-17; Ephesians
3:1-5).
- The postmodernist says, “I’m interested in the
values of my group and my community.” But the Christian says, “I’m
interested in the morals and teachings of Jesus that will bless me
and will be the standard by which I am judged” (Matt. 7:24-27; John
12:48).
I encourage all of us to
make it a habit to routinely examine our own attitude about such things
and make sure we are properly aligned with what God has revealed to us
through His Son and His Word. It is much easier to correct the course at
the first sign of going astray than after we have changed our bearing
completely.
With love,
Thomas Sneed
