Blessed Are The Pure In Heart

We commonly think of "the pure in heart" as those who are innocent, trusting, kind and free of malice and evil desires.  These desirable qualities certainly apply to those with pure hearts but those who are truly "pure in heart" are they that have had their hearts cleansed by faith (Acts 15:9) and obedience (1 Peter 1:22).  These are the ones who will see God.

Many times in the Scriptures the heart is a synonym for the mind of center of intellect.  It is the heart that controls our thoughts, words and actions.  Jesus taught us, "The things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.  For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, slanders" (Mat. 15:18-19).  This is the fruit of an evil heart.

Those with a pure heart are pure in thought, in word and action.  Paul exhorts those who are chosen of God do "put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience" (Col 3:12).  Such is the fruit of a heart that has been cleansed.

Some folks start out with a clean heart and defile it by a sinful life.  When they realize the condition they are in they think the situation is hopeless, that there is nothing they can do.  The truth is Jesus can cleanse every heart.  In Corinthians 6:9-11, Paul says the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God.  He goes on to say that some of the Corinthians were at one time among the unrighteous but they had been washed in the blood of Jesus Christ.

We show the world our true self by what we do.  Our actions paint a picture of our heart for the world. to see.  What does your picture look like?  I hope it is a beautiful portrait of love.  If not, Jesus is still in the heart cleaning business.  Won't you take him yours?
