Christ and the Law
Matthew 5:17-48
The Law of Moses was God’s law given to Israel through Moses and was
highly regarded by the Jews of Jesus’ day. Jesus understood their
respect for the Law and therefore chose His words carefully here. But,
as Coffman says, “the difference in ‘fulfilling’ and ‘destroying’ the
Law of Moses was about the same as the difference between ‘paying off’ a
promissory note and ‘repudiating’ it. In either case, it is effectively
removed.”
Jesus fulfilled the Law in three ways. First He alone kept the commands
of the Law perfectly. Jesus’ actions and character satisfied both the
letter and spirit of the Law. He was the only one ever to accomplish
this. Second, Jesus fulfilled the promises of the Law. The great
promise of the Law of Moses was a Messiah who would take away the sins
of His people. Every messianic prophecy given under the Law found its
fulfillment in Christ. Third, Jesus completed the Old Testament Law by
expanding its teachings and bringing them to the perfection of the Law
of Liberty. Jesus’ own teachings revealed for all the truth of the Law:
the purity of a man’s heart is as important as his obedience to God’s
commands.
In the remainder of the chapter Jesus expands six of the individual
commands given in the Law of Moses. Over the next several weeks we will
look at each of these in turn. I believe this will be a very good way
for us to begin the New Year.
And speaking of New Year’s, as so many follow the custom of making
resolutions at this time of the year, let me suggest that among ours we
include striving for a better acquaintance and understanding of God’s
holy Word. “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is
profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and
of that which is to come” (1 Tim. 4:8).
Best Wishes for all in
the coming year,
Thomas Sneed
