Don't Look Back
We have all seen it ... there is a steep ledge to climb or a swinging
bridge to cross an someone says: "Don't look down!" In the spiritual
life, the cry seems to be concerned with a different direction: "Don't
look back!"
Luke 9:62 tells us, "No man having put his hand to the plow, an
looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." There are steep climbs
and shaky bridges that come in every spiritual life. Jesus said the
way that leads to life is a strait and narrow way with few that are
finding it. (Matt 7:13) The original language may
suggest that Jesus is saying that the way to life eternal is an
established way that few continue to follow to its conclusion. In
the parable of the sower (Matt), Jesus warns of several pitfalls
that lurk in the way of those that hear the word of the kingdom; lack of
understanding, tribulation, persecution, cares of the world and the
deceitfulness of riches. Those that allow any of those things to
cause them to look back will not be able to bear fruit unto perfection.
We all remember what happened to Lot's wife. She was on the very
brink of salvation from the horrendous sinners that had surrounded her for
so many years, She was about to escape the Lord's revenge on their
wickedness. Yet, she looked back. If you are a Christian, you
have put off the old man of sin, which is corrupt according to the
deceitful lust (Eph 4:22).
