Flee from Idolatry

1 Corinthians 10:14

In his letter to the church at Corinth Paul wrote, "Wherefore my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry" (1 Corinthians 10:14)  It seems the Corinthians had a problem separating themselves from the false religions of the world around them.  They sought to worship the Living God while still taking part in pagan feast with their worldly friends.  The inspired apostle told them very plainly, "Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils" (v. 21).

Today we cringe at the thought of worshipping false gods.  We would not dare sacrifice to some man-made god or hold a feast in their honor.  We take great effort to distance ourselves from any form of religion or worship other than what is authorized by God in the New Testament.  In that way we have come a long way from those Paul addressed.

Yet we still must be on guard against idolatry.  One of the problems with idolatry is that those who practice it give what rightly belongs to God to someone or something other than the Almighty.  When we give money, time or talents that rightly belong to God to something else we are just as guilty of idolatry as some of the Corinthians were.

do we spend all day Saturday watching football and arrive at Bible class without having our lesson complete?  Do we miss the worship service on Sunday morning to "sleep in" because we were out late Saturday night?  Are we forced to put less in the offering plate because we just had to have a new pair of shoes even though our old ones still look new?  do we miss services on Wednesday night to work over-time so we can have extra money for an upcoming vacation?  These are just some of the ways we can be guilty of idolatry.

We all need to take time to evaluate many of the things in our lives that hinder us from giving our all to God.  We can have time to enjoy ourselves,  Wd can buy things we don't need just because we want them.  We can work an extra shift every now and them for a little extra spending money.  But when these things take the place of God and our service to Him, they become idols.  Beloved, flee from idolatry.
