“How Have The Mighty Fallen!”
2 Sam. 1:17-27
When
David learned of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan he chanted a lament for
Israel’s fallen heroes. His words are recorded for us in 2 Samuel 1.
It is always proper to follow David’s example in honoring those who have
given their lives in service to their country.
Today is
Veteran’s Day. On this day, above all others, America remembers and
honors all of those men and women who have served in her Armed Forces.
These brave souls selflessly paid the price, often with their own lives,
for the freedoms we enjoy. We owe them a great debt of thanks.
There is
another group to whom we own much thanks. Many through the years have
dedicated their lives to the fighting of a different kind of battle.
Men like Peter, Paul and Stephen and women such as Priscilla,
Phoebe
and Dorcas,
along with countless others who lived lives dedicated to the cause of
Christ—warring against Satan and his army. Because of them the gospel
has spread. They sacrificed self so the church might grow. Many souls
were brought to Christ from their efforts. All of us who have had our
sins washed away have someone to thank. May we never forget those who
have given so that we might receive.
Use the time set aside
today and tomorrow to honor and thank those Americans who have given so
much for the freedoms we enjoy. They deserve our gratitude every day.
Remember too that many have suffered and died fighting our souls’
greatest enemy.
Yours in Him,
Thomas Sneed
