Jesus Turns Water into Wine
John 2
Jesus and
his disciples had been called to a marriage in Cana of Galilee. At some
point during the feast Jesus’ mother informs Him that, “They have no wine.”
She then tells the servants to do “whatsoever he saith unto you.” Jesus
tells the servants to fill six water pots with water. When they had done so
He commanded them, “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast,”
which they did. The governor, upon tasting the wine commented to the
bridegroom, “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when
men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good
wine until now.
Taking note
of the situation (that there was no wine) Mary goes to her son Jesus. We
may be sure she knew he had the power to alleviate the shortage. Mary
identified a problem and sought help in the best possible place. Too many
times we seek help every else first before turning to God, but not Mary.
Mary
brought the problem to Jesus’ attention with the expectation that He would
correct the situation. When we take our cares to God we ought to have
Mary’s attitude of assurance, knowing that he is able to do exceedingly
above all that we request.
Once she
had notified her son of the shortage Jesus’ mother set about doing what see
could to help, namely, instructing the servants to do whatever Jesus said.
We too must remember that God will do His part but we must do ours.
Finally,
notice that when Mary asked Jesus for help she did not tell or even suggest
to Him how He might best replenish the wine or even that He should but she
trusted Him to do what was best. Sometimes we think we know the best
solution to our own problems but we must trust in God and allow Him to do as
He pleases rather than expecting Him to act as we desire.
Love,
Thomas Sneed
