MAKE NO OATH AT ALL

Matthew 33-37

The ninth commandment was a prohibition against giving false testimony against someone in court but many of the leading Jews ignored the implied ban against lying under different circumstances.  They did not feel obligated to be truthful unless they were under oath.

At the core of what Jesus teaches here is the idea that a Christian is to be a man or woman of their word.  It is vital to be truthful always.  Not even telling “little white lies” or “stretching the truth a little” are acceptable habits for a child of God.  Of course this goes with out saying.

Some have questioned whether or not, as Christians, we are restricted from swearing in court since Christ here says, “swear no oath at all.”  Christ had no such restriction in mind.  If we are asked to make a statement attesting to our truthfulness then we ought to do so.  What Christ wants is for His disciples to be people whose word is never doubted because it is known by all that when a Christian says “yes” he means yes and when he says “no” he means no.

It takes a lot of effort and not a little courage to tell the truth all the time.  Sometimes we are tempted to lie to avoid punishment (such as when the policeman asks us if we know how fast we were driving).  Or we might think telling a small lie might save someone’s feelings or keep them from being upset with us.  And many of us have been known to lie about our weight and age from time to time.  But lying under these circumstances, while it seems harmless, damages our creditability and if we do it enough then people begin to wonder if we are telling the truth about more important things.  After all, how can we “preach the truth in love” if we are not known to be truthful, loving people?
