Sticks And Stones
When the Jewish leaders tried to trap Jesus by bringing
the woman caught in adultery, Jesus responded with, "If any one of you is
without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her" (John 8:7).
Jesus turned the attention from the accused to the accusers.
On another occasion Jesus said, "Why do you look at
the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank
in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the
speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own
eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will
see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye" (Luke 6:41-42).
In both of these passages Jesus is teaching us to be
careful of criticism. Before we start criticizing others we must examine
ourselves and see if we measure up to the same standard of perfection. If
God can overlook all my faults, shouldn't I be able to overlook the faults
of others? Don't forget the sticks and stones Jesus mentioned above.
Remember the children's rhyme about stick and stones?
It's not true. Words do hurt. Let's be careful how we use them. And let's
all work to keep our tongues bridled (James 1:26).
In love,
Thomas Sneed
