The Church Has the Right Covenant

A covenant is a formal agreement between two parties.  In Genesis chapter 15 God made a covenant with Abraham, promising that his descendents would be as numerous as the stars.  Later, when God delivered the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, He made a covenant with them saying that He would bless them if they would keep His word.  When Jesus died on the cross the covenant between God and Israel was taken out of the way and a new covenant was established.  Today, we are under this new covenant.

The new covenant is superior to the old in every way.  The new covenant is written in the heart “with the Spirit of the living God;” the old was written on tablets of stone.  While the old covenant could only condemn, the new covenant, under Christ, saves.  The old covenant was limited and temporary but Christ’s covenant is complete and final (John 20:30-31; Jude 3).  The old covenant was dedicated with the blood of animals but the new covenant was dedicated with the blood of Christ (Matt. 9:15-17; Hebrews 10:10).

Christ’s covenant, the gospel, is God’s power to save.  Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation…” (Romans 1:16).  Jesus told Nicodemus that he could not enter the kingdom without a new birth.  This new birth cannot be accomplished without the gospel of Christ.  “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever…And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (1 Peter 1:23-25).  The ones who have entered into a covenant relationship with God are those who have heard, believed, and obeyed the gospel of Christ (Acts 18:8).
