The Passover and the Lord’s Supper
Exodus 12 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-34
I
find it interesting that Israel prepared the Passover lamb from the
tenth day of the month till the fourteenth day of the month--a total of
five days. I also find it interesting that when Moses recorded the
account of the ten plagues the narrative moves on at a steady even pace
until he comes to the tenth and final plague. At this point he stops
the narration and goes into great detail concerning the preparations for
the feast and the eating of the feast.
One
reason I find this interesting is because the Passover was typical of
the Lord’s Supper. The Passover feast served as a memorial of God’s
deliverance of Israel from bondage to Egypt. Similarly, the Lord’s
Supper is a memorial to Christians of our deliverance from bondage to
sin. Preparation was an important part of the Passover feast.
Preparation is equally important for us today when we observe the
Supper.
We must make the necessary effort to
carefully prepare ourselves before partaking of the Lord’s Supper.
During the worship service we use songs and prayer, among other things,
to help us prepare but our preparation must begin before entering the
building. In fact, we ought to be preparing ourselves throughout the
week.
Each
and every day we must look forward to the day when we meet with the
saints for the special reason of keeping this memorial. As we go about
our daily routine let us strive to remember the coming Lord’s Day and to
live pure lives so that we are ready to commune not only with each other
but with the God we serve and worship. He demands our best and He is
worthy of it.
