What Does It Mean To Be Thankful?
I hope that we all had a very happy
Thanksgiving. Perhaps you spent a couple of days out of town visiting
family and friends. Or, maybe you hosted Thanksgiving at your house. Or
were you among the growing number who chooses to go out to celebrate rather
than cook? No matter how you spent the day, you probably took a moment to
give thanks for all that you have been blessed with. That is what truly
matters after all.
What does it mean to be thankful? Is
it simply saying “thank you” or is it something more? Perhaps it depends
upon what you are thankful for? For instance, if the man in line behind you
gives you the quarter you “just had” to pay for your groceries a simple
spoken “thanks” is sufficient. But if your neighbors rake your leaves when
you are out of town it might be appropriate to invite them over for dinner
to show your gratitude.
Considering this sliding scale of
thanksgiving, what should be our response to what our Heavenly Father has
done for us? Is it enough to merely say “thank you?” I believe the Bible
teaches that the appropriate response to God’s gift of salvation is a life
dedicated to worshipping and serving Him. I also believe that our gratitude
should manifest itself in our willingness to tell others what God has done
for them. What will you do today to show how thankful you are?
In love,
