Whose
Testimony Do You Trust
Little Tommy's grandpa was somewhat of a philosopher and never missed an
opportunity to give out bits of wisdom to his grandson. "Yessirree,
Tommy," he said one day. "Always remember - fools are certain but wise men
always doubt." Tommy asked, "Are you sure grandpa?" The old man replied,
"Yes, my boy, I'm absolutely certain."
What
are you absolutely certain of? There is a well-entrenched mindset in our
world today that insist you cannot be certain of anything, except that you
cannot be certain of anything! This philosophy vies those who insist on
the existence of absolute, transcendent truth with a suspicious eye. With
a straight face, many who consider themselves intellectually and
philosophically sophisticated insist that no one can be certain that a
particular Biblical, moral or ethical position is absolutely true and they
are absolutely certain of that position! Ted Cabal said, "It should be
obvious that it is self-defeating to preach that no worldview can claim to
be the truth, when this sermon itself - if it is to be taken seriously -
must inherently claim to be the truth" (An Introduction to Post
modernity). So those who insist there is no such thing as absolute truth?
The
sophisticated mind games modern people play with are not new. Two thousand
years ago some people denied that Jesus Christ came to earth as God in
flesh, the apostle John spoke about these ancient "postmodernists" who
doubted Jesus in 1 John, and he didn't "beat around the bush." He called
them "liars...antichrists...false prophets...not God" and insisted that
they have the spirit of error" 2:22 4:1,3,6b). He further states
unequivocally "whoever denies the Son does not have the father either"
(2:23). His strongest statement is found in 1 John 5:9-12: "If we receive
the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness
of God which He has testified of His Son... he who does not believe God
has made him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God
has given of His Son."
Today
many recoil at the absolute certainty with which John speaks of Jesus,
Millions bear witness to a generic, not-threatening Jesus who is but one
entrée on a multiple-choice menu of saviors who can get us to God, But the
witness of God is greater. The testimony of God in the New Testament is
that Jesus Christ is the unique, only begotten Son of God sent to redeem
the world (John 3:16). He is the way, the truth, the life and without him
no one can come to the Father (John 14:16). If you don't trust the
testimony God Himself has given of His Son, whose testimony do you trust?
