Does God Multitask

We live in a multi-task world.  I know I am not the only one who carries on a phone conversation with one person while writing an email to a second and, at the same time, making out a shopping list for later.  We have all, it seems, taken on too much to do any given day of the week.  And while Saturday was once our day of rest and relaxation it is now spent, more times than not, trying to get caught up before the next week starts.  So, it is little wonder that our Sunday’s find us running wide open from the time the alarm clock wakes us till we finally crawl back into bed for a couple of hours sleep before starting all over again Monday morning.

It is becoming more and more the case that our multi-task mentality is finding its way into our worship service.  Perhaps you have seen a brother or sister balancing the check book during the song service, planning lunch during the Lord’s Supper or making out a shopping list during the sermon.  When did we become so caught up in getting the most out of every hour that we forgot that Sunday is the Lord’s Day?

Friends, I do not mean to say that we cannot use some of our time on Sunday to take care of pressing issues.  Neither am I suggesting we shouldn’t spend a few hours between church services relaxing with friends and family.  But I can’t help but wonder what, if anything, is so important we cannot give our undivided attention to God for four hours a week.  God expects our best and He is not willing to take anything less.  When we allow ourselves to be distracted by trivial matters that is exactly what we are asking Him to do.
